Travel Vaccines For South America

Vaccines and travel advice for Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, or Uruguay

The recommended vaccinations and travel medications depend on many factors, such as past immunizations, itinerary, activities, length of stay, and current medical conditions. Vaccination and medication recommendations are tailored to each individual.

As part of our thorough consultation at North Vancouver Travel Clinic, we will ensure you and your loved ones are up to date, if necessary, with routine vaccinations such as measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), Tdap, polio, influenza, etc. Below is a list of potential vaccinations for Africa:

Hepatitis A: Transmitted through food and water.

Hepatitis B: Mainly spread through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. Recommended for certain travelers or for all travelers going to areas with a high prevalence of the virus.

Typhoid: Transmitted through food and water.

Rabies: Rabies is transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. The risk exists from dogs and other terrestrial animals in most areas of South America.

Polio: The virus is typically transmitted through contaminated water or food and multiplies in the intestine. It can enter the nervous system and cause paralysis. All travelers entering an area in South America where the poliovirus is present or where there is an outbreak should ensure they are immune. All adults who received polio vaccinations in childhood may also need a booster dose if traveling to a polio-risk area in one of these countries.

Cholera and ETEC E. coli: Transmitted through food and water.

Yellow fever: see below.

Other Health-related Concerns

Yellow Fever Risk and Vaccination Requirements: Yellow fever is a serious viral disease spread by infected mosquitoes. The disease can cause symptoms ranging from mild fever, headache, and muscle pain to severe jaundice, bleeding, and organ failure. The best way to prevent yellow fever is through vaccination, which is often required for travelers heading to areas where the disease is common. Certain countries in South America may require proof of yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival. At North Vancouver Travel Clinic, we will provide you with the certificate if needed.

Malaria Risk and Prevention: There is a relatively high risk of malaria in most areas and countries in South America. Our expert consultant will review your itinerary and recommend and prescribe appropriate and safe antimalarial preventative medication if necessary. You will also receive comprehensive mosquito avoidance tips during your consultation.

Traveler's Diarrhea: Up to 50% of travelers to a developing country will experience some form of diarrhea. This occurs as a result of ingesting food and water that contain a pathogen, leading to a localized infection of the intestine. At North Vancouver Travel Clinic, we will prescribe and provide you with an appropriate antibiotic to carry with you for self-treatment in case of a severe infection. Additionally, we will provide tips on food and water safety.

High Altitude Sickness: High altitude sickness could be a major issue for some travelers arriving at altitudes of 8,000 ft or above in some cities such as Cusco in Peru or Quito in Ecuador. We will review your itinerary and provide you with appropriate preventative measures, including prescription medication if necessary and appropriate.
