North Vancouver Travel Clinic FAQ
Travel consultation is a one-on-one appointment with a travel health nurse to help you prepare for a safe and healthy trip. During the visit, the nurse will review your travel plans, destinations, and health history to identify any risks you may face while abroad. You’ll receive clear, personalized advice on recommended or required vaccines based on your past immunizations, as well as tips on staying safe with food and water, and avoiding insect and animal bites. If needed, the nurse can also provide medications for things like malaria prevention, traveler’s diarrhea, or altitude sickness. In most cases, vaccines and medications can be given during the same visit, unless additional doses are needed before your trip. This service is especially helpful if you’ve never had travel vaccines before, aren’t sure what boosters you need, or want to get medications for your trip.
Vaccination appointment is a quick 15-min appointment to receive a single vaccine. This service is for individuals who only need a single vaccine (ie. a booster dose of Typhoid vaccine) and do not need any travel medicine and/or vaccine recommendations.
The ideal time to book a travel consultation is at least 6 weeks before your departure, especially if you have not received travel vaccinations before or if it has been a long time since your last ones. This allows enough time to complete any vaccine series that require multiple doses for full protection. However, it is never too late to benefit from a consultation even if your trip is just days away. Receiving recommended vaccines, even close to departure, can still provide partial protection for your travels.
To book an appointment, simply click the “Book Online” button located in the top right-hand corner of our webpage. This will direct you to our secure booking portal, where you can select the appropriate appointment type and choose a convenient date and time based on your availability.
The vaccines you need for travel depend on your destination, trip duration, planned activities, and health history. Everyone should ensure routine vaccines such as: Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), polio, seasonal flu, and COVID-19—are up to date. Depending on where you’re going, you may also need destination-specific vaccines like hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, or meningococcal vaccine, and you may need medications for malaria prevention, traveler’s diarrhea, or altitude sickness. A travel consultation with a healthcare provider is the best way to get a personalized plan based on your itinerary and health status.
Our clinic can provide medications for malaria prevention, severe traveler’s diarrhea, and altitude sickness. Please note that the consultation fee still applies, even if you do not require a full consultation or additional vaccinations.
While we do offer certain publicly funded vaccines for updates (ie. tetanus/diphtheria), travel-specific vaccines are available on a private-pay basis. You can provide your insurance information during your appointment, and our clinic can submit your claim directly to determine if any of your travel vaccines are covered.
To find out if you have coverage for travel vaccines, you will need to call your insurance directly or check your coverage details online.
Each vaccine has a different cost. You may call us at the clinic at 604-971-5163 to inquire about pricing, or email us at info@nvtc.ca.

Yes, we offer all vaccines required for school entry as private-pay options. For patients seeking publicly funded school-entry vaccines in BC—such as those required for healthcare-related programs—our clinic must submit a request to North Shore Public Health. This request includes your personal health number (PHN), the specific vaccines needed, and your program or area of study. Public Health will review your eligibility and provide the vaccines at their discretion. If you wish to receive publicly funded vaccines, please call us at 604‑971‑5163 with your details so we can place the order before your appointment. Please allow 1–2 weeks for the vaccines to become available.

TB FAQS
Unfortunately, we do not do direct-billing for TB Skin Tests. Our clinic will give you an invoice after your appointment and you can submit the claim to your insurance for reimbursement.
The TB Skin Test is a private pay service. The cost is $98, and a $10 discount may be given to students (with proof of student enrolment)
Yes, we provide two-step TB skin test. Following the first TB test, a second one should be booked between 1-3 weeks later.
A positive tuberculosis (TB) skin test does not necessarily indicate active TB disease. The next step is a follow-up chest X-ray to assess for an active infection. You should consult your family physician and inform them of the positive result so they can order the appropriate imaging. For individuals without a family physician, our clinic can provide a chest X-ray requisition for a fee of $30. The requisition will be emailed to you within 1–3 business days.
Please note that if you’ve had a positive TB skin test in the past, you usually do not need to take the test again. Once the test is positive, it often stays positive for life, so repeating it doesn’t give any new information. The next important step is usually a Chest X-ray to check if there is any active tuberculosis. Your healthcare provider may also recommend other tests or an evaluation based on your health and risk factors.
To book an appointment, simply click the “Book Online” button located in the top right-hand corner of our webpage. This will direct you to our secure booking portal, where you can select the appropriate appointment type and choose a convenient date and time based on your availability. During your appointment, we will book you for your follow-up appointment (TB-reading) 48-72 hours after.
